North American Bird Watching Open

2007 North American Birdwatching Open Results!

During March, April, and May of this year, Birdwatchers searched and found a wide variety of birds on the over 72 golf courses that participated in this year’s North American Birdwatching Open.  Over a 24-hour period, staff, members, and local birders searched high and low for common and rare species.  The bird counts were once again significant on both Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and Audubon Signature golf courses.

Many of the migratory birds that participants were searching for travel thousands of miles on their biannual journeys between southern wintering areas and northern breeding grounds.  By maintaining habitat in non-play areas, golf courses can offer a place for the birds to stop over or even stay for the summer.  Thirty-eight golf courses counted 50 or more species of birds and a high percent saw 40-plus species.  As in previous years, a significant number of species of conservation concern were reported.

The Birdwatching Open coincides with International Migratory Bird Day and focuses attention on the wonder of migratory birds and the role golf courses can play in conserving habitats.  Many thanks to all who participated in 2007!
