The Resort at Red Hawk (Lakes Course)
Once a duck-hunting retreat and also a ranch for raising champion Labrador retrievers and quarter horses and cattle grazing, the first certified Audubon Signature Cooperative Sanctuary in Nevada is located within the eastern Spanish Springs Valley in the extreme northeast corner of the city of Sparks.  Pastures were historically flood irrigated by the Orr Extension of the Spanish Springs Valley ditch, the watershed of which drains into the Truckee River.  Northern Desert Shrub vegetation, which covers 74% of the site, includes such species as sagebrush, black greasewood, rabbit brush, and Indian rice grass.  Because the project is located in the Great Basin cold desert regional areas, preserving and expanding wetlands is a primary focus.  The front nine holes of the golf course  is integrated into natural springs, while the back nine  surrounds two large existing lakes and wetlands, both with the Sierra Nevada Mountains as a backdrop and both designed by golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones II.   For more about Red Hawk, visit www.resortatredhawk.com.
