Top of the Rock Golf Course
Near the Mark Twain National Forest in southwestern Missouri
at Ridgedale, lies the 47-acre Top of the Rock Golf Course, overlooking
Table Rock Lake. Owned by Bass Pro Shops, the nine-hole course is
associated with the Big Cedar Lodge. Over 38% of the property has
been kept in a natural state or planted in native grasses, wildflowers
(cardinal flower, meadow phlox, river oats, sweet coneflower), or native
trees. But the cart paths have also garnered great interest --
they are made from bits of recycled tires. Recycling doesn’t stop
with the cart paths. The pro shop was a metal building once used
as a private hanger for a plane. Inside the pro shop, the ceiling
is covered with tongue and groove wood recycled from a church demolished
during the Oklahoma City bomb blast. Top of the Rock Golf Course
became the first Certified Audubon Signature Sanctuary in Missouri on February 14,
1997.
