Colbert Hills
Colbert Hills, owned by the Kansas State University Golf Course Management
and Research Foundation, is a ‘living laboratory’ for continued research
on interactions of human managed landscapes and the environment.
The 18-hole main golf course and nine- hole par-three First Tee course
are located on 300 acres of prairie in the Flint Hills on the
northwest side of Manhattan, Kansas. Each green, tee, and fairway
of the nine-hole course is seeded with a different type of bentgrass.
The Jim Colbert-designed golf facility will serve as an ongoing venue
for research on a variety of topics, serve as an instructional venue for
the first golf course management program of its kind, and be the site of
the Earl Woods National Youth Golf Academy. Kansas State’s
four-year golf course management program is the first of its kind to
combine the traditional turf management courses with classes in
communications, business, hospitality, and human resources. The
environmental research and agricultural study began before construction
and will continue as “a living laboratory” permanently through the
College of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering. The
research team is studying the environmental impact of golf courses on
natural resources and is evaluating the best turf grass management for
the golf industry in the Midwest. Learn more about research
at Colbert Hills through its website at
