Hollyhock Hollow Sanctuary Selkirk, NY

Real Estate Donations

Beaver Dam Road Wetland Preserve and Selkirk Woods, Albany County, NY

The Beaver Dam Road Wetland Preserve, donated by Peter Mayone, is a 14-acre parcel of woodland and wetland that borders approximately 200 acres of privately-owned wetlands in the Town of Bethlehem in southern Albany County.  Nearby Selkirk Woods, a 5-acre parcel of second growth woodland donated by Joseph Allegretta, borders the same wetland complex.  Together, the two preserves help to buffer the wetland from residential development.  Both preserves are maintained as natural wildlife habitat and are not open to the public.

Charleston Preserve, Montgomery County, NY
Richard Salomon of Newtonville, New York, donated 87 acres in the town of Charleston, Montgomery County.  The property consists of former farmland, woods, and a small wetland.  Located at the corner of Johansen Drive and Route 162, the preserve is maintained as natural wildlife habitat and may be used in the future for research purposes.  It is not open to the public.

Hollyhock Hollow Sanctuary, Albany County, NY

Hollyhock Hollow on Rarick Road in Selkirk, NY, is the former home of Leona and Robert Rienow, Ph. D.  Professor Rienow, one of the early environmental advocates in the United States, helped to establish the chapter system of the Nature Conservancy in meetings at the site, and bequeathed the land to Audubon International.  In addition to hosting Audubon International’s headquarters, the 140-acre property serves as a wildlife sanctuary and public education center, open free of charge to the public daily.  It includes walking trails for self-guided and interpreted walks available to individuals and community groups.

Rockwell Nature Preserve, Albany County, NY

The 26-acre Rockwell Nature Preserve in Loudonville, NY, was donated to Audubon International by the estate of Marjorie Doyle Rockwell.  The land is designated to remain "forever wild" and is used as a research, education, and management area for urban wildlife conservation and water resource protection.  It is not open to the public at this time.

Schroon River Preserve, Warren County, NY

The Schroon River Preserve, donated by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kent, consists of 86 acres along the Schroon River in the Adirondack Park in the Town of Chester.  Mr. Kent was a 30-year veteran Conservation Officer who owned the property for over fifty years.  The preserve is significant for its several acres of wetlands, including seasonal wetlands and vernal pools, and old growth forest.  The preserve buffers the Schroon River from the Adirondack Northway (I-87), helping to protect water quality by filtering highway runoff before it enters the river.

Easements

Spring Creek Ranch, Tennessee
In 1998, Audubon International accepted a conservation easement over a 330-acre site that comprises Spring Creek Ranch Golf Club in Collierville, Tennessee.  The easement will protect the property from development for any other purpose and ensure preservation of its open space and wildlife habitat values.
